Choosing a Fine Jewellery Gift

Fine jewellery is a gift that gets used. A good ring or pendant is worn to work, to dinner and on holiday, and is often kept for many years.

That makes it worth choosing carefully. It helps to think about the person's style, what they already wear and the occasion.

At By Pariah, every piece is made from 100% certified recycled gold and natural, untreated stones, and is designed to be worn every day rather than for a single season. This guide covers our semi-precious stones, our diamond, emerald and sapphire pieces, and some practical points on sizing, metals and care.

Semi-Precious Stones: Moss Agate, Smokey Quartz and Red Carnelian

Semi-precious stones bring colour and individuality to a gift. Each stone is natural and has its own markings, so no two of our gemstone rings or Pebble Pendants are exactly the same.

Moss Agate: for nature lovers

Moss Agate is a clear or milky chalcedony with green mineral inclusions that look like moss or foliage. It is traditionally associated with growth and new beginnings.

It suits someone who loves gardening or the outdoors, or someone marking a new start, such as a new home or a new baby.

Styling note: These stones are designed to be worn together. Start with one pendant and add a second on a different gold chain, or mix Moss Agate and Smokey Quartz in one ring stack. Every piece takes its colour from what you wear it with.

Smokey Quartz: for understated style

Smokey Quartz is a natural quartz in shades from pale brown to deep grey-brown, and its tone shifts slightly in different light. It is the main stone in our Smoke & Light collection.

It works well for someone with a minimal or monochrome wardrobe. Traditionally, it is considered a grounding stone.

Carnelian: for the one starting something new

Carnelian has been worn for thousands of years. It appears in ancient Egyptian jewellery, and Roman signet rings were often carved from it. Its colour ranges from orange to deep red.

It is traditionally linked with confidence and energy, which makes it a thoughtful gift for a new job, a milestone birthday or another fresh start.

Diamonds, Emeralds and Sapphires for Milestone Occasions

For anniversaries, milestone birthdays and other significant occasions, many people choose a precious stone. Our fine jewellery uses natural, untreated diamonds, emeralds and sapphires, set in recycled gold.

Diamonds

A diamond gift doesn't need to be an engagement ring. Ours are designed to be worn every day.

Emeralds

Emerald is the birthstone for May and the traditional stone for a 55th wedding anniversary. It has long been associated with love and loyalty.

Our Reverie Collection is built around it. The Prism Stacking Ring in Emerald is a good place to start. For a larger gift, the Aurora Cocktail Ring in Emerald or the Reverie Emerald Prism Ring Stack.

Sapphires

Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the traditional stone for a 45th wedding anniversary. Our navy sapphire is a deep blue that is easy to wear every day.

Give the Prism Stacking Ring in Navy Sapphire on its own or as the anchor of a stack. Or choose the Chubby Band in Pavé Diamond & Sapphire, which pairs sapphires with white diamonds.

Before You Choose: A Few Practical Notes

Getting the ring size right. The most reliable way is to borrow a ring they already wear on the same finger, then check it against our ring size guide. If you can't, a pendant, earrings or a bangle avoids the need for a size.

Matching their metal. Look at what they already wear. Yellow gold has a warmer look; white tones and black rhodium are cooler. Our stones work with both.

Thinking in collections. A jewellery gift can be added to over time, for example a Pebble Pendant this year and a second stone for the next birthday. Our pieces are designed to be layered and stacked, so new pieces work with earlier ones.

Caring for natural stones. Agate, quartz and carnelian are hard-wearing, but natural stones need some care: no perfume directly on the stone, off for the gym and the pool, a soft cloth to clean. Our care guide covers the rest.

Timing and returns. Check our shipping page for delivery dates and Christmas cut-offs, and our returns policy in case an exchange is needed.

A little extra. Spend over £1,000 and we'll include our Travel Jewellery Roll as a gift with purchase: useful for storing jewellery when travelling.

Finding the Right Piece

A good jewellery gift is one that gets worn. Think about the person's style and the occasion, then choose the stone that suits them: Moss Agate for a new start, Carnelian for a milestone, or a diamond band for everyday wear.
